Where to take breaks as an HGV driver in the UK

Planning your break before you set off saves stress when the clock is running down. Here's what to look for and where drivers are stopping.

Plan breaks before you need them

Under EU/GB drivers' hours rules you need a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours of driving (it can be split into 15 then 30 minutes). Check the latest GOV.UK guidance for your work.

Pick a main spot and a backup — popular lay-bys and services fill up, especially in the evening.

What makes a good break spot

Enough room to get in and out without reversing into traffic, toilets nearby and somewhere to grab food or a drink.

Check other drivers' reviews and photos on the map so you know what to expect before you arrive.

    Use the map

Turn on the Break parking filter on the HGVDriver.com map, or search for facilities like toilets or showers.
